Rogers-Otsego Youth Baseball Association (ROYBA), evaluators and the coaches take the tryout process very seriously and try to make it as fair as possible. Players will be evaluated on their fundamental skills of the game. ROYBA will do everything possible to give every child an opportunity to display their skills. We strive to provide an even playing field for all candidates. The one thing the system cannot measure is the fact that a good player may not perform well on the day of the tryouts so players should do everything they can to be in shape and prepared when they come to tryouts. They will be asked to sprint, do agility, and throw long and hard. We recognize these are young kids who develop differently and we will give them every opportunity to perform.
The goal this year is to have 2 or 3 travel teams formed at ages 10-14 and 1 travel team at age 9. Each team will have 12 players. In order to facilitate more equal evaluations of all players at the various age levels, we will be conducting the 4th - 7th grade house evaluations and 9U-15U travel tryouts for each age level at similar times. We are conducting the evaluations as early as possible in order to give our travel coaches more time to work with their teams before the season starts the first week of May.
Players are NOT allowed to wear travel hats or uniforms they may have from previous years teams.
Coach Selection and their child team placement
Coaching candidates are interviewed prior to team selection by a committee made up of board members who determine the best candidates based on their baseball knowledge, coaching skills and coaching philosophy. The children of the pre-selected travel coaches are not automatically on the travel team. Coaches children must participate in tryouts and receive acceptable scores in order to be placed on the team. For AAA team they must be in the top 20 on the evaluation list and top 32 for the AA team.
The travel tryouts, along with the 4th-7th grade house evaluations, will be done by a group of independent evaluators hired by the Rogers - Otsego Youth Baseball Association (ROYBA). These evaluators have background in playing/coaching baseball at the high school/college level as well as being part of evaluations for other communities. None of the evaluators are affiliated in any way with ROYBA and they do not live or have children playing baseball in the district. Although some pre-selected travel coaches may be at the tryout and take notes, they will have NO input or weight in the scoring. This is to provide the the coaches with as much info as possible when making the coach picked players.
All players will be given a score based upon the following criteria:
|9-10 year olds||46||45|
|11 year olds||46||50|
|12 year olds||52||55|
|13 year olds||52||60|
|14 yr old||52||60|
After the 2nd session of travel tryouts are completed, the top scores for each age group are automatically placed on the AAA travel team. The travel coaches will use the evaluator's scores to make final choices for the AAA travel team. The coach is limited how far they can go down the "list" to select their final choices. For AAA team they cannot select any player lower than #20 on the evaluation list and lower than #32 for the AA. After the AAA team is selected the same process is used for the AA team and the A team if we can field an A team. Coaches children must participate in tryouts and receive acceptable scores just as any other player in order to be placed on the team.
Players names that have made a Travel team for the 9U - 15U age groups will be posted on the Rogers - Otsego Youth Baseball website as soon possible.
Any players not making a travel team will automatically be registered into their corresponding house league based on their current grade.
NOTE: If a 2nd, 3rd, 8th or 9th grader tries out for a travel team and is NOT chosen for any travel team, they MUST attend the Majors (2nd-3rd grade) or 8th-9th Grade house evaluations which are held outside in April or early May. See the House Information Center for those date/times/ locations.
Due to the limited amount of space at the facility and for the overall benefit for the participants, NO SPECTATORS will be allowed in tryouts. This rule will be strictly enforced and we ask that you all respect this request.
It is the parent’s responsibility to determine whether your player has a conflict with the tryout schedule. If your player is unable to make the tryout date, he/she will not be eligible for a travel team.
If you feel there are extenuating circumstances such as injury, family emergencies etc. preventing your son or daughter from attending the tryouts, you can petition the ROYBA board to discuss the extenuating circumstances and possible remedies. The family must petition the board as soon as the family realizes there is a conflict. Family functions and vacations are not considered extenuating circumstances. Any concessions or remedies would be at the sole discretion of the ROYBA board and will be handled on a case by case basis. You may be required to furnish supporting documentation upon request by the ROYBA board.
